Family Council

We haven't ever really had effective family councils. For the most part, they have been occasional gatherings where we tell the girls we are enforcing social media rules or are introducing a new chore chart. But Geoff and I realized the many things that could be accomplished with a monthly family council.

For starters, it prepares our kids for current and future leadership roles. They can understand the purpose of a spiritual thought shared at the beginning of a meeting. They can gain experience creating an agenda and conducting a meeting. They can learn how to council effectively. They experience calendaring upcoming activities and events. They fulfill assignments to plan activities, vacations and other responsibilities at home. And they learn to follow up on assigned commitments.

Overall, the family planning and organizing will take place with everyone present and contributing. We plan to give our girls more ownership on things, and allow mistakes to help them learn (that is pretty hard for me). Ideally we would have started this years ago, but we didn't, so here we go.

We had our first kick-off family council last Sunday. All of the girls filled their agendas with doodles. That is how they keep their attention. This one is Adele's.

We're planning ahead on Family Night and Conference Club assignments (which will help us be more consistent...hopefully!), and we introduced a new Habits initiative for cash, as well as some knowledge challenges for cash. More on all of this in the coming weeks.
