Siem Reap - Day 1

The drive north to Siem Reap is less crowded and a nicer road than the route from the island. Our church friends arranged for a member from Siem Reap, who drives a van, to come pick us up and take us. He was a calm driver, kind and had a comfortable car. We were grateful! Here is some typical countryside.

We made a stop at Spider Town where they sell fried tarantulas. Sometimes they are live there too, but we didn't see any. They had all sorts of other "snacks" to choose from as well.

Let's take a look at some of these options up close.

Beetles, cockroaches, silk worm cocoons, baby frogs...

Some insect stews...

Maybe some eggs or baby chickens...

We didn't get any pictures of the fried tarantulas!

We arrived at a new Marriott hotel, just three weeks old. While carrying our bags in, a Marriott employee saw a Song Saa tag on our bag, gathered three former Song Saa employees and we were treated like royalty! They were so happy to have this connection with us and showed us so much kindness and attention.

The hotel is so comfortable! It is nice to be a little pampered for a few days!

Today, our first day we had a slow day and tried to make a plan for our four days here. The girls wanted to swim in the pool, so Day 1 was here at the hotel relaxing.

In the evening, we went to the Phare Circus, a popular show put on by a non-profit organization who teaches performance skills to its students. The show was very entertaining with loads of amazing tricks and stunts, although it had some unnecessary sexual humor in the story. The venue was small and intimate. It was a fun night.

We got to bed early. Day 2 would start early!
